The Annual Civic Luncheon, a highlight of the Aldersgate Ward Club's social calendar was held once again in the Livery Hall of Guildhall. On a bright, sunny, but cold January day, 133 members and guests filled the Hall to enjoy a sparkling wine reception and a 3 course lunch with more excellent wines provided again by The Cook and the Butler.

The Club was honoured to welcome not only the Lord Mayor, Lord Mountevans, but also the Aldermanic Sheriff, Charles Bowman together with their respective consorts Juliet and Samantha.

During his introductory speech, the Master reminded everyone that Aldersgate was of course the Number One Ward and Club (factually, due to alphabetic ordering, but also in so many other ways). He then proposed the Toast to the Lord Mayor who responded with an interesting speech on his involvement with and interest in all things Maritime.

The Lord Mountevans chairs the Government’s Maritime Growth Study, has been Chairman of Maritime UK since 2014, is Chairman of Maritime London and a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. His Mayoral theme for the year is ‘Innovate here – succeed anywhere’. He sees innovation as a key part of London’s success, not just in maritime services and logistics, but also in professional services, skills and education. The Lord Mayor congratulated the Club's Honorary Secretary on another well organised event and presented her with a gift from the Civic Team.

The Master presented a contribution from the Club to the Lord Mayor's Appeal. This was followed unusually, by the Lady Mayoress, Lady Mountevans giving a short speech of her own, introducing us all to the upcoming 'Sheriffs' Ball'. This is a fund raising event in aid of the Lord Mayor's Appeal and is hosted by both Sheriffs (Alderman Charles Bowman and Dr Christine Rigden). It will be held in Guildhall on 23rd September 2016 and will have a nautical twist. Click Here to access the website.
