Aldersgate Ward Club

The Aldersgate Ward Club were privileged to take part in a memorable Christmas Carol Service in the Charterhouse Chapel on 16th December 2018.

The Charterhouse, one of the most historically interesting sites in London, was the site of a Carthusian monastery founded in 1371 on a site used as a burial ground for the Black Death in 1348. After the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry V!!!, some of the buildings were incorporated into a fine mansion for Sir Edward North and both Elizabeth I and James I stayed there.  In 1611 the Charterhouse passed into the ownership of Thomas Sutton, probably the richest commoner in England, who endowed a school for 40 scholars and an Almshouse for 80 men.  The school has now moved to Godalming in Surrey, but the Charterhouse is still home to the “brothers”, men (and now also women) over 60 on entry and in need of financial and social support, but who are in good health and desire to live in a community.

After a reception of mulled wine and mince pies in the Old Library, we proceeded to the Chapel for a splendid Carol Service, led by The Preacher of the Charterhouse, Robin Isherwood. The Pegasus Choir sang superbly four relatively modern carols, interspersed by readings, both traditional and modern, by The Preacher and two of the Charterhouse Brothers. The choir and organ were so uplifting that the congregational carols were sung with great gusto.

After the service we repaired (in the rain) to “The Vestry”, in nearby Charterhouse Street.  Adjusting to the somewhat cramped seating arrangements soon gave way to seasonal bonhomie and the enjoyment of a tasty three course supper, complete with crackers and hats.   An excellent way to prepare for Christmas!
