Private wine tasting Saturday 11th January 2025
AWC visit to the Renegade Urban Winery on Saturday 11th January 2025
On Saturday 11th January, 17 members and two guests had an interesting visit to the Renegade Urban Winery in Walthamstow. The Company was formed in 2016 in Bethnal Green and, following their success, they moved to their current premises in 2021.
The grapes they use are hand-harvested and imported from France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy and some come from a small vineyard in Essex. Between 40,000 and 60,000 bottles are produced annually.
We tasted four of their current wines which were introduced to us by our guide, Holly, who also clearly discussed our questions. The wines were:
-
Kyra 2022; Sauvignon Blanc; grapes from Bordeaux, France
-
Araceli 2022; Pinot Grigio; grapes from Pfalz, Germany
-
Crystal 2022; Croatina Nat Fizz, Rosé; grapes from Lombardy, Italy
-
Gary 2021; Pinot Noir; grapes also from Lombardy, Italy
Holly advised that no preservatives are added to the wines and they are not classed as organic.
Each label on a bottle of wine shows the eyes of a person who lives in the U.K. and has purchased a Renegade wine. The eyes/names are chosen at random.
Following the tastings, we moved to reserved tables for a tasty meal and a glass of the wine which we individually chose from the four we had tasted. As always at an AWC event, we had a lively and cordial discussion.
Our visit to the Winery was most enjoyable and we were grateful that Phillipa identified it and made our visit possible.
