Dickensian Carol Service
23rd December 2019
Aldersgate Ward Club
Members of the Club and their guests were out in force on 23rd December in order to attend at
St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield, a service of readings from Dickens and carols he would have known and heard. Many of the images we are familiar with in our Christmases today are drawn from the Victorian era and especially Charles Dickens book 'A Christmas Carol'.
The ancient and atmospheric church was full to capacity and all attending greatly appreciated the wonderful singing of the professional choir (who were appropriately dressed in Victorian costume!). The service concluded with a magnificent rendition of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.
After mulled wine and mince pies a number of members extended the evening by joining together for supper and a libation or three at Carluccio's.
